Revisiting the Wrap Finish for Cab PE6 and the Fleet

The Board approved this cab refurbishment last year, and the dark walnut wrap was installed in our pilot cab, PE6. After living with the finish, the design direction is being reconsidered in favor of a brushed-metal look — lighter, cleaner, and more in keeping with the lobby program. Below: the current state of PE6, followed by three 3M DI-NOC architectural film options under consideration. All three are shown in the same cab, on equal footing, so the Board can evaluate side by side.

The Dark Walnut Wrap, As Built

This is the finish currently in PE6 — the dark walnut DI-NOC wrap approved by the Board last year and installed as the pilot. In daylight, the cab reads heavier and more closed-in than the renderings suggested. The walnut competes with the travertine floor rather than complementing it, and the stainless reveals get visually lost against the dark grain. The consensus from the Board walkthrough was that the cab does not match the lobby's finish level — the motivation for revisiting the wrap selection now.

01The Three Alternatives

Brushed-Metal Options
Option A
Warm Taupe Linen elevator cab finish — primary view
Hover to zoom
ME-1434

Warm Taupe Linen

Light · Warm Undertone

A soft, light-warm linen-textured brushed metal. Reads as a refined off-white with a faint taupe cast — the lightest of the three, opening the cab and reflecting more ambient light.

  • Brightest of the three options
  • Warm undertone complements travertine flooring
  • Light tone visually enlarges the cab
  • Most forgiving on minor scuffs
Option B
Neutral Silver Linen elevator cab finish — primary view

ME-904

Neutral Silver Linen

Mid · Cool Neutral

A balanced mid-tone silver brushed metal with a clean linen weave. Sits between the two extremes — neutral, contemporary, and the easiest match to existing stainless trim.

  • True neutral — pairs with any accent color
  • Closest match to existing stainless reveals
  • Contemporary, hospitality-grade appearance
  • Recommended for fleet consistency
Option C
Graphite Linen elevator cab finish — primary view

ME-377

Graphite Linen

Dark · Dramatic

A deep graphite brushed metal — the most dramatic of the three. Anchors the cab, highlights the stainless reveals, and creates a sophisticated, almost private-elevator feel.

  • Strongest visual statement
  • Stainless reveals stand out most
  • Premium, high-contrast appearance
  • Shows fingerprints more readily than lighter tones

Pricing Note — Possible Change Order

This project was approved by the Board last year using the contractor's pricing at that time. Since approval, 3M has rolled out the new DI-NOC 2024–2026 Collection and restructured its catalog into Quick-Ship and Import-Only categories. Material pricing on the ME (metal) series may have shifted from the figures that backed last year's approval.

Before the Board commits to a finish, we should:

  • Request a refreshed material quote from the contractor for ME-1434, ME-904, and ME-377 at current 3M pricing
  • Confirm Quick-Ship vs Import-Only status for the selected SKU (Import-Only adds lead time)
  • If the new total exceeds the approved budget, prepare a formal change order for Board ratification before procurement

Once pricing is confirmed, the change order — if needed — can be presented alongside the selected finish for a single combined approval.

Next Steps

Select a Finish, Then Confirm Pricing

We recommend the Board select a preferred brushed-metal finish from the three options above based on aesthetics alone, and then direct the contractor to return with a refreshed material quote at current 3M pricing for that finish. If the updated quote falls within the originally approved budget, the project can proceed without a change order. If material costs have moved, a formal change order will be brought to the Board for ratification before procurement. Once approved, material is ordered in a single run to guarantee batch consistency across all cabs, and installation is phased one cab at a time to keep service uninterrupted for residents.
